What Is Dry Eye Syndrome (DES)?

dry eye diagram 2a.jpg

Dry eye syndrome happens when your eyes do not produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly. This leads to irritation, inflammation, and fluctuating vision. Common symptoms include:

  • Burning or stinging
  • Itching and redness
  • A sandy or gritty sensation
  • Excessive tearing
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurry vision that comes and goes

When untreated, dry eye can gradually worsen and may increase the risk of corneal damage.

The Most Common Cause of Dry Eye

A major cause of chronic dry eye is meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). These glands line your eyelids and create the protective oil layer that keeps tears from evaporating. When they become clogged or inflamed, the tear film breaks down quickly, leading to dryness, irritation, and blurry vision.

Two common conditions that contribute to MGD include:

Ocular Rosacea

This inflammatory condition affects small blood vessels on the eyelids and can cause redness and burning. It frequently disrupts meibomian gland function.

Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelid margins. It creates redness, crusting, irritation, and debris along the lash line. Left untreated, it commonly leads to dry eye symptoms and gland blockage.

Lasting and Effective Dry Eye Treatment in Burlington

At Dr.'s Eyecare Center , we offer advanced therapies that go far beyond over-the-counter drops. Each treatment targets the underlying inflammation and gland dysfunction that cause chronic dryness.

    Micro Exfoliation

This gentle treatment removes debris and buildup along the lash line. It improves lid hygiene, reduces inflammation, and lowers the bacterial load that contributes to blepharitis and meibomian gland blockage.

    Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

IPL uses controlled pulses of therapeutic light to treat inflammation around the eyelids. It targets abnormal blood vessels that contribute to MGD and ocular rosacea. IPL also improves the quality and flow of oils from the meibomian glands, supporting a healthier tear film.

    Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT)

LLLT uses soothing LED light to stimulate cellular repair, improve circulation, and reduce eyelid inflammation. This treatment also helps open obstructed oil glands.
